Overheard by the fireworks display at the grocery store:
Little Boy: Why do we celebrate on the 4th of July anyway?
Dad: Because that's the day America signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 after we won the Revolutionary War against the British.
Little Boy: What were we fighting the British about?
Dad: Well, even though we had our own country, their king still wanted to rule us and make us pay taxes to him, so we decided to stand up for ourselves and fight for the right to be in charge of our own country.
Little Boy: Are we still mad at each other?
Dad: No, we consider the British to be our closest friends.
Little Boy: So what do they do on the 4th of July?
Dad: Hey, want a candy bar!

Every 4th of July we all get together in a big meeting hall and plan our invasion of the USA.
Redirection is a wonderful tool for parents.

"Honey, it's considered rude to ask ladies how old they are." "Why? People ask me how old I am all the time." Um, okay, carry on.
But the French were our friends during the Revolution. It just gets too complicated.
I don't really think to deeply about this holiday, because the way I see it people need a day off.
"Look, something shiny!" We use this one a lot.
I think the Brits spend the day thanking whatever gods they can think of that they aren't responsible for Dubya. :-)
This kid will be a history teacher some day, either that or a lawyer.
