Why do I do it?
I've had people look at my doodles and cartoons and tell me not to quit my day job. Fortunately, this doesn't bother me, because duh - I'm not a cartoonist! But I am, however, very interested in learning how to draw cartoons.
It would be pretty naive of me to put out these pencil-drawn doodles and claim to be some kind of cartoonist. Especially when my blog is visited by the likes of some very talented professional blog artists such as David Simmer II from Blogography...
and Doug Savage from Savage Chickens...
These people and others could easily be critical of my rudimentary efforts and laugh me off as an amateur. Instead, they've been graciously supportive and have encouraged me to keep working on it and developing my skills. Thanks!
Doodles to date
As proof that I have made some ground, here's a little history on the evolution of the doodles I've posted to date.
My first doodle, "Fear of Commitment" was drawn on my flight on the way home from my USO tour in Asia in 1982.
We had played on several small islands in the South Pacific and I was struck by how remote they were. The whole thought of being stranded on a desert island was on my mind. What you see here is just exactly what it says - a doodle, made with a Bic pen on a 4 1/2" x 5 1/2" memo pad in my lap.
The next one Fashion Trend was made the same way around the same timeframe.
During my early years on the road I must have drawn a hundred of these little cartoon doodles, but somehow managed to lose them in the post-road shuffle. It wasn't until I started this blog that I decided to pick up the pen and try it again.
My first cartoon written for this blog was TV Time. This ended up being an experiment in scanning a pencil drawing, which turned out poorly. In an attempt to darken the image it instead turned out all blotchy. This is also when I realized that this Blogger editor automatically reduces your pictures if they're too big, forcing the reader to have to click on the image to enlarge it. Yuk.
This taught me to make sure my next drawing, Holiday Greetings, was drawn in pen instead of pencil. Unfortunately, a lot of people didn't get the highly complex double pun that one of the caterpillars is celebrating Christmas while the other one is a Jewish chrysalis. Try to keep up here folks!
In my remaining drawings, you'll notice I started using typed text instead of handwritten. This made it easier to concentrate on the drawing without having to commit to the text until I was good and ready. I know, I should have waited longer - ha ha.
This brings me back around to today's post, Life Without Logic, which would be the name of an ongoing strip if I ever get that far. This one is actually based on a series of true incidents, kind of all smushed into one toon. Lucky for me I have teenagers to keep giving me material.
So there you have it, everything you never wanted to know about my doodles. But hey, that's what we're all doing here anyway isn't it? If not for the self-deprecating stories, pictures and drawings that we all share what fun would all these blogs be anyway?
I know that's what keeps me coming back for more!
